These days, Hiring in Start Ups or closely held enterprises is very much like Speed Dating, You talk to many, many possible candidates and work to make a great long term decision in a matter of hours and days.
With what is at stake around making a good hiring decision, here are three points of focus for you to view your Candidates.
First, look at them through your eyes as it relates to what you need for them to accomplish and how you will like working with them in the process.
Secondly, look at them through the eyes of the team they will work with. Is there the potential for good chemistry? Why or why not? Allow yourself to be specific and consider the whole team, not just the strongest members.
Third, look at the Candidate through the eyes of the people they will most impact with their work. If they had a chance to talk to them from the view of “their” needs, do you think they would hire them? Why or why not?
On this basis, you have a more balanced view of someone who has real potential to be useful from the start as well as through time when the company and position challenges grow.
In small and early stages, every single hire has a material impact on the real potential of succeeding. Make your selections with care because (in part) you are betting your future on them.
